Church History
1907 -- 2002
Years ago, a small group of families settled
what was then call the “Leonard Division” of Madisonville
and the community became known as “Dunbar”. Dunbar’s
location was a small area nestled between Madison Road and Erie Avenue
with Redbank Road being the main thoroughfare connecting the two. It consisted
of the lower part of Tompkins Avenue (the Chrittendon Estate), Emery Lane,
Bush Hill, Corsica Place and the James Murphy Estate. Because of Dunbar’s
distance from the heart or the mainstream of Madisonville, and because
Dunbar had no church of it’s own it was difficult to get to the
few churches that existed in Madisonville. For in those days few could
afford cars and walking was the most common method of getting to and fro.
There was a longing and need among those who were saved, sanctified and
filled with the Holy Ghost to come together to pray, sing, testify and
shout in praise to their God. God who kept them rich in love for Him,
their families and neighbors, despite their poor and humbled conditions
and positions in life. So, a few of them began to assemble together at
the home of Nannie Underwood, the mother-in-law of Nannie B. Underwood.
As they grew in numbers and Grace, they began holding their prayer meetings
under trees in various yards throughout the community until Rev. Hawkins,
under the unction of the Holy Spirit, knew it was time to organize a Church.
Rev. Hawkins, Rev. Harvey Miller,
Rev. Donan, Ben Ballew, Thomas Duett and Gradison Emery (the latter three
became the first Deacons) assembled themselves together to make the necessary
arrangements to complete the organization of the Church on the second
week of December, 1907. Rev. Harvey Miller suggested and the people agreed
on the name New Mission Baptist Church.
Realizing they needed land somewhere in
the community where they could build, they held a special prayer meeting
taking God at His Word when He said, “ask and it shall be given”.
Given it was by the late Bro. James Murphy, who later became New Mission’s
oldest living member in terms of age, 108 years old, before passing from
mortality to immortality with the Lord.
The first church built was one big room that sat upon six Locust posts
and contained crude benches and an old coal stove. God continued to Bless
this God-fearing congregation by increasing their numbers until the first
building had to be torn down. With zeal like Nehemiah, the men and women
worked side by side to erect the second church building; it stood in the
center of that community on Corsica Place at the foot of Bush Hill, until
torn down in the summer of 1995.
The spirit and the memories of building
that church still lives today in the descendants of those who founded
or became members of the earlier congregation. Sis. Lil Murphy carried
rod along side the men while Sis. Nannie B. Underwood, Sis. Pearl Miller
and her daughter, Sis. Cornelia White churned cement. The first baptizing
took place in a creek that existed where the Red Bank Expressway is now
until the Washington’s, who lived at the end of Corsica Place, offered
their pool to the church.
Our Pastors up to this present time are

• New Mission Baptist Church marched three-fourths of a mile, on
August 18, 1963, from the old Church in Dunbar on Corsica to a church
building that we purchased here at 4809 Ravenna Street, Madisonville.
The building sat on what is now our parking lot. As the membership continued
to grow Pastor Brown brought to the membership’s attention the need
to purchase the property that our existing church sits on today.
• Baptizing was held at Community Baptist Church on Peabody Street.
• The name of our church became the New Mission Missionary Baptist
Church, and our motto became “The Church Dedicated to the Reclamation
of the Lost”

on Reading Road.

• Pastor Robert Smith, Jr. (1976-1995)
• Pastor Smith was the youngest Pastor ever elected. Under the leadership
of Pastor Smith, God continued to pour out His blessings on New Mission,
especially in the adding of new members. So much so until on Sundays the
sanctuary was filled beyond the allotted capacity and many times was in
violation of the fire code. God spoke to the Pastor to let him know that
it was time for a greater work for him and the congregation to do. Building
a new and larger edifice became a priority. Fifteen members were chosen
Bro. David Harper, Chairman, and Dea. Edward Boyd, Co-chairman, Sis. Margaret
Williams, Secretary, Rev. Dan Moore, Dea. William Anderson, Dea. Ulysses
Seay, Dea. Leroy Weathers, Bro. John Martin, Sis. Hattie Blair, Sis. Alma
Lowman, Sis. Minnie Brown, Sis. Dorothy Gamble (Matthew), Sis. Valerie
Phillips, Sis. Annie Smith and Rev. Amiel Brown. Bro. Linnie Guice replaced
Rev. Dan Moore who was called to Pastor. They began to meet in October
1977. Although there were obstacles, setbacks, and rejections, they persevered,
and on October 28, 1979 the groundbreaking ceremony took place. In April
of 1980 there was a major setback when in the process of erecting the
new building, a storm caused the roof and outer walls to collapse. But
under God’s watchful eye, no one was injured and finally on March
1, 1981, Pastor Smith led the congregation and friends, after having our
last worship service in the old building, around the block back to the
new edifice, singing “We Come This Far by Faith”. Our theme
became “The Church with Acts 20-20 Vision”. Dedication Services
were held on June 7, 1981 with former Pastor George Q. Brown and his congregation,
the Second New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of Cleveland, Ohio as our
guest.
